Website self-check: HTTPS, mobile tag and copyright year
These are the same three quick checks we used in our sample of 141 UK small-business homepages. Enter your homepage address, paste the page's source code, and see how your site compares. It runs entirely in your browser: what you paste is not uploaded or stored.
This is a quick self-check, not a full audit. It looks at three things on one page and cannot see speed, security, search ranking or how the site looks on a phone.
1. Get your page source
On a computer, open your homepage, right-click and choose "View page source". Select all, copy, and paste it below.
2. Your results
| Check | Your result | Our sample (20 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| HTTPS address | 13 of 107 returned pages were not served over valid HTTPS | |
| Mobile viewport tag | 4 of 106 HTML pages had no viewport tag | |
| Copyright year | 47 of 106 showed no copyright year; of the 59 that did, 12 said 2024 or earlier |
What the checks mean
- HTTPS: this tool only checks that your address starts with https://. The certificate itself can still be expired or wrong, so also look for the padlock in your browser's address bar and click it to confirm there is no warning.
- Viewport tag: a
meta name="viewport"tag tells phones to fit the page to the screen. Having it does not guarantee the site looks good on a phone; missing it usually means a tiny, zoomed-out page. - Copyright year: a footer that says 2021 can look abandoned even if the business is thriving. We look for the latest year near the end of the page. No year at all is not a fault, just a missed chance to show the site is current.
The sample is small, non-random and covers London and Manchester only, so treat the comparison as a rough guide. Method and the open data are on the study page.
